Nest Labs announced today that it is acquiring Revolv, a Colorado-based smart home startup, for an undisclosed sum.

The company will be discontinuing its smart home hub and joining the Google-backed Nest team starting on Monday, according to The Verge.

It now appears two of the tech industry's biggest titans are gearing up to do battle for control of the connected home.

Until today, the company offered one of the most future-proof smart home hubs, with seven radios covering an array of different smart home protocols. According to Nest, the acquisition is intended to strengthen the existing Works with Nest ecosystem of smart home products, making this something of an “acquihire.”

While surprising, the acquisition is not the first of its kind. Back in August, Samsung acquired SmartThings, one of Revolv's biggest competitors. Unlike Revolv, however, SmartThings is continuing to offer its hub and associated products.

Regardless, it now appears two of the tech industry's biggest titans are gearing up to do battle for control of the connected home, with hub technology at the center of it all.

Nest underplayed the announcement, including it as almost a footnote in a blog post about new additions to the Works with Nest program, including Pebble smartwatches.

The Google subsidiary is certainly as busy as ever, continuing its push to control more aspects of the home. So far this year, Nest has acquired DIY security company Dropcam for $555 million and begun selling its products in Europe.

While the Revolv hub has been discontinued, the company promises to continue support for the product, as well as honor its one-year warranty.
