She’s surprisingly helpful as you gussy up.

The kitchen, bedroom, living room, and home office are all popular locations for your Echo Dot or other Alexa-enabled device, but I’m here to persuade you to put Alexa in an unconventional spot: the bathroom.

I know, I know—it sounds a bit strange to think about bringing a voice assistant in the bathroom. But you might be surprised at just how helpful Alexa can be.

Wondering how to use Alexa in the bathroom? From offering first aid advice to keeping track of your weight, there are a variety of ways to use Amazon’s voice assistant, both on her own and with the help of other smart products. When it comes to how to use Alexa in the bathroom, here are nine of our favorite ways.

1. Ask for first aid tips

Most of us turn to our phones for questions like “How should you treat a baby’s fever?” and “What should I do if I get bit by a spider?” However, when your hands are full, Alexa can supply answers to these types of questions thanks to the Mayo Clinic First Aid skill. The reputable source has useful information on all kinds of first aid, such as guidance for treating cuts, burns, bites, and more.

While this skill is incredibly helpful, keep in mind it’s not meant to be used in life-threatening situations. In that case, always call emergency services.

2. Play music as you wash your hands

The Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser works with Alexa.

Do you actually wash your hands for the recommended 20 seconds? If you’re guilty of cutting scrub time short, the Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser is a fun way to improve your hand-washing habits.

When we tested the soap dispenser, we loved that it plays music via a nearby Echo speaker to keep you engaged every time you wash your hands—it’s fun for both kids and adults.

Plus, it has a long-lasting battery and offers touch-free soap dispensing that keeps it from getting too grimey.

3. Turn your bathroom into a spa

Do you love the soothing music that they play at your local spa? You can easily recreate those serene vibes during your bath or shower with the highly rated Zen Sounds: Healing Sounds Alexa skill using the best sounding Echo speaker, the Echo Dot (5th gen). You can choose from zen sounds, Japanese garden sounds, and many more, all of which are hour-long audio clips. These make the perfect background for when you’re taking a bubble bath at the end of a long week!

4. Help manage your weight

The Etekcity Smart Wi-Fi Scale works with Alexa.

Whether you’re trying to lose, gain, or maintain your weight, there are a few different ways that Alexa can help. For instance, if you have the Etekcity Smart Wi-Fi Scale in your bathroom, it will share data with Alexa, allowing you to ask her for your latest weight measurement or how much weight you’ve lost in a certain time period.

Just keep in mind that, while helpful, this shouldn’t replace medical advice—it’s merely meant to be informative and motivational.

5. Draw you the perfect shower

When it comes to how to use Alexa in the bathroom, this is by far my favorite skill on this list. If you have a Moen Smart Shower Controller, you can ask Alexa to turn on your fancy smart shower and even set it to a precise temperature.

The controller comes in different models that can be used with either two or four shower fixtures—such as a showerhead, wand, and/or wall jets—and you can even save custom settings that can be activated with voice commands.

6. Help you get ready in the morning

If you’ve ever wished that you could easily adjust the lighting in your bathroom as you get ready in the morning, you need the Hauschen Home Smart Mirror, which works with Alexa. It comes in a variety of sizes, and it has an LED light around the edges that you can adjust via your smartphone or voice commands. It even has an anti-fog setting so it doesn’t get steamed up after your shower.

That’s not the only smart mirror that works with Alexa, either! The simplehuman Sensor Mirror Hi-Fi actually has Alexa built-in, and it’s the perfect option for personal grooming or makeup application.

You can easily adjust the light brightness and use it to play music or your favorite podcast, and it has a special sensor that detects how close you are from the mirror and adjusts the volume accordingly.

7. Keep your floors clean

The iRobot Braava Jet M6 is a smart mop that works with Alexa.

High-traffic areas like the bathroom need regular cleaning, and while Alexa can’t scrub the toilet for you (not yet, anyway), she can facilitate floor cleaning if you have a smart mop like the iRobot Braava Jet M6.

Because this gadget creates a smart map with individually labeled rooms, you can simply ask Alexa to mop the bathroom when you notice the floor is getting a little dirty.

Plus, if you have a compatible Roomba vacuum, the two cleaning devices can work together, vacuuming and mopping for your home—it’s the next best thing to a house cleaner!

8. Order product refills

When you run out of hand soap or shampoo in the bathroom, you’ll be glad to have Alexa nearby. All you have to do is ask her to put an item on your shopping list, and she’ll note it within the Alexa app.

Plus, if you have an Echo with a screen you can display a widget with your shopping list and shop for your favorite bathroom products on Amazon. For the bathroom, we like the Echo Show 5 because of its small footprint and camera privacy shutter.

9. Control the lights and exhaust fan

Using Alexa on an Echo like the Echo Show 10 (pictured), you can turn the lights on and off in your bathroom via smart switches—even after you've left the room.

We all forget to turn on the bathroom exhaust fan or turn the lights off when we leave the bathroom from time to time. However, you don’t have to worry about walking back over to flip things on or off when you install a smart switch, like the Kasa Wi-Fi Light Switch.

The switches can be used for more than just controlling the lights in your bathroom, too. You can use them to power your bathroom exhaust fan to help remove moisture from the air after a shower. The switches can be set to schedules and incorporated into Alexa routines to automate your bathroom experience.

Alexa privacy tips

The Echo Show 5 (second-gen) has a mic mute button and an on/off switch for the camera.

The bathroom is a sacred place in the home, and there are several ways you can protect your privacy from Alexa while getting the most out of your Amazon Echo in the bathroom.

All Echo speakers and smart displays have a mic mute button on the top to keep her from listening in when you don't want her to. Echo Show smart displays also have a sliding camera shutter on the top, as well, that blocks the camera entirely, giving you peace of mind that no one is watching.

You can also delete your Alexa voice history at any time.
