Updated 2 years later - Wish Device was more durable.
Upated July 2019 - In the last two years, I have added a smaller dog and was using this tracker on all three. Although their customer service is super great, once the trackers got some age on them, they started breaking apart. Not just the collar bands which have to be replaced at least monthly. I bought a stock of replacements for these. The plastic device itself would separate and the electronics just fall out in a field. Whistle replaced several (3-5) of them before telling me that they could not continue to replace them. I bought replacements 4 times out of pocket. I could not justify and extra $80 each time one broke. My dogs are very active and play hard. I'm certain that this contributes to the breaking issue. I still use the tracker on one of my shepherds but cancelled service on the other two looking for a more durable option.-----------------------------------------------------------What would you pay to have your pet returned to you?The following is a summary of our lost pet experience that led us to Whistle 3 pet tracking. You can skip to bottom for a product summary with pros and cons.In August of 2017 my family and I had to ask that question (What would you pay to have your pet returned to you?) repeatedly for thirty-six hours as we printed "Lost Dog - Reward" posters. We had already signed up for several paid lost pet recovery services (these can be quite expensive). We had banners and signs professionally printed with a custom website to forward information on sightings. Our 3 year old German Shepherd had fallen off of a retaining wall on our property and was lost. Until then, we never had considered a pet tracker such as the Whistle. In the end, some neighbors (2 1/2 miles away) spotted the gentle giant in a nearby treeline. After about 2 hours of searching, and 38 hours after he went missing, he was found, frightened and hungry but overall, no worse for the wear.Previous to becoming lost, Shadow had been micro-chipped, AKC Registered, was wearing a high visibility collar with large bright blue lettering of our phone number. Additionally the collar had a custom bright blue aluminum tag with our contact information. None of this helped. We never took into consideration that he would avoid strangers. He was a rescue pup that had come from an abusive owner when he was about six months old. Although at 100+ pounds he had an intimidating look, he would as soon flee as he would fight. Unless he had been injured, no stranger had much of a chance of getting the information from the collar. The micro-chip would not be of any use unless he were captured and taken to a local animal control shelter or a veterinarian. While going through this experience, I realized the availability of pet trackers such as Whistle 3. This type of service/device was, not very long ago, a luxury expense that the average person could not justifiably afford. Now I can't imagine why I had not invested in this for either of my dogs. I immediately bought one for my female German Shepherd. Within the hour of finding my lost German Shepherd, I purchased the second one.At the time of purchase, I paid about $75 a piece (they are cheaper now) plus next day shipping from Amazon. I bought a one year plan for about $95 / plan. My total for both pet trackers and one year of service on both was about $340. We were already prepared to pay a $500-$1000 reward and, considering that I had spent at least that much on trying to find just one pup, this was a bargain.SUMMARY INFORMATIONI have owned two Whistle 3 pet trackers for 4+ months now. They hook into your home's WiFi (2.4 Ghz only) to provide a "safe" zone where only the WiFi is active. Once they leave the "safe" zone, cellular GPS turns on and begins notifying you with location information.Notification preferences (including frequency of notifications) are user selected from the app. The app can send push notifications to your device(s), send email(s), and/or send text/SMS messages. The app can be installed on multiple IOS or Android devices and even allows for family sharing. My family has it set to send out text messages to all members if either of the dogs leave home.I had one problem with the rubber strap breaking that held the collar attachment. When I sought support, Whistle 3 had already identified this as a potential problem in some models and quickly sent out 2 replacements with upgraded straps. The Whistle 3 service place is about $95/year - A little cheaper if you pay for 2 years up front - $10/month if you want to pay monthly. This was about average for most cellular based pet tracking.Battery life for my pets is about 7-10 days before becoming critically low when starting from a full charge. It would probably be a bit longer but my pets take trips with me to town (1-3 times a week for about an hour each) which causes the collars to go into cellular GPS mode (uses more power). Charging is pretty quick (about an hour) using the included chargers. The app will let me know if I had forgotten to charge them and the batteries are getting low.The GPS tracking is usually very accurate but sometimes slightly delayed (1-5 minutes behind). Going into areas with spotty AT&T coverage will delay reporting and affect accuracy. Obviously if there is no AT&T coverage in your area, this is not the solution for you. When my dogs ride with me to town, I check the accuracy and reporting regularly. Every now and then, the location will be off a bit but I can update location information from my app and within a minute or so, the location is spot-on accurate. I have had a few false alarms (about 3 times in the last 4 months) where the app sent me SMS/Text saying one of the dogs were away from home when they were not. I think that this was due to the home WiFi loosing connection. It is not often enough to be a con for me.The IOS and Android apps are very informative and easy to use. From the app, you can set a large variety of preference such as notifications. The app also reports on your pet's physical activity much like Fitbit and other human physical trackers do. Although this was never a selling point for me, I now find myself checking on their activity levels. Unfortunately, the web interface is not available for Whistle 3. You can still log in for account information and support but not actual tracking information. For me this was a slight con.The size of the units, on a dog's collar, is minimal (see pictures). For my German Shepherds they are not even noticeable. I tried one on my cat and it was really too chunky for my taste. The devices are basically waterproof (IPX7). My dogs have tested them well going through creeks and mud without any problem. Some things to consider as possible negative of this tracker:1-They are collar dependent - If your pet loses his/her collar, these won't be of much use. (This is not specific to Whistle 3 as most trackers are collar dependent.)2-The battery will deplete much quicker if your pet becomes lost due to using the much higher energy consuming cellular communication. I would not rely on the location results to constantly transmit over a day or maybe two from a full charge. The reporting options can be spaced farther apart to conserve battery life but the little battery can only do so much. (This is not specific to Whistle 3 as most trackers have a shorterbattery life, less notifications, and/or larger physical profiles.)3-These trackers do not have any type of visible or audible location assistance (flashing strobe/LED or Audible chirp) like some other trackers do.4-This device is not a near-field tracking device (probably not correct term) such as used for some sport / hunting dogs. I think that you might be able to, while searching in the field in the area of last location alert, track the WiFi signal if close enough but probably not at a distance to really matter.5-As of the date of this review, this device only works with AT&T cellular service. If AT&T coverage is not available or not good in your area, I would not suggest this tracker for you.6-You have to use the included charger to charge the battery. The devices do not have a micro USB charging port as some other trackers do. I think that this may be to keep them waterproof. I only mention this because if your charger that came with the device gets lost or damaged, you will have to purchase a replacement to hopefully arrive before your battery dies.Overall these pet trackers are great. The peace of mind that my family has is well worth the yearly price. For under $15 a month, I feel that I could find either of my dogs should they become lost. Even with the couple of hiccups, I am compelled to give it 5 stars.
