I first got another light switch and installed it. It was made by GE, a brand I trust, and they had their own app. It was dreadful. What was worse was that we needed a hub to control it.
If you don’t know what a hub is, here it is. A hub connects to your WiFi in your home. This way, you can control whatever devices are on that hub while you’re away. If you like this sort of thing, have at it. I don’t.
I don’t want to purchase extra devices to control devices I’ve already purchased. On top of that, the associated app was slow and you had to log in every time just to use it.
So, I read up on a Leviton switch and it had good reviews. Installation was easier than the GE product and the app is simply... simple. Within minutes I had the switch set up and I connected it to our Alexa app. Now I can control that one set of lights from anywhere in the world because it’s linked to my WiFi with no hub required.
Why I give this product five stars is because I’m not going to look for any other brand or product to continue upgrading my house. The app shows how I can link lights together and set up schedules when we’re away from home. And within ten seconds I’ll be able to see what lights are on or off.
Again, all of this without having to purchase a hub device.
- I found the switches to work exactly as advertised. Note, they do require a cover plate, but they come with both white and cream colored switch plates.
- If you want to 3 way, you need the DD0SR-DZL for the secondary switch.
- I find the switches to be solid with good wiring connections. They feel better designed for American circuits than some cheaper Chinese switches I've installed.
- As others have noted, they do require a neutral wire. However, many times people do not find a neutral in every electrical box of a 3-way. This is not a show stopper, you should still be able to make it work. The key to this is that non-smart switches usually have 3 wires, a power wire and 2 traveler wires. These switches only require a single traveler wire, which means you can re-purpose the second traveler wire as a neutral.
- I added these to work with Amazon Echo. Connecting to Echo was simple and quick.
- This biggest problem I had was finding space in the electrical box that holds the switch(s). The switch itself is larger than the equivalent non-smart switch. It still fits in but takes away space from the mass of wires you have in the electrical box. Add the additional wire(s) for the neutral, and I was running out of space to fit everything in. I did do it, but it was a pain. Note, I'm betting a professional electrician has the experience and knowledge of how to pack everything into the box easily, I just didn't have that experience (although it got a little better as I went on).
I’m putting them everywhere just to mess with people that come over. It’s fun to turn the light off in the bathrooms or garage. They’re not the cheapest device but sure fun to play with.
Few things that need a little work
When you drop a phase the switch will just stop working when power is fully restored. You have to kill the breaker and then all is back to normal. Make the switch a little smarter so it becomes functional again.
Make the switch is a little smaller because if you’re trying to put them in a one to three gang box and the wire comes in the sides of the gang box it’s really hard to push one or three of the switches in the box because there’s no room on the sides. Making them smaller will definitely help with this issue.

*** Update March 31, 2021 ***
I have installed a total of 5 of these switches and all continue to work flawlessly (earliest switch I installed was in 2019). One other nice feature I forgot to mention was the "status" light. You can configure the LED light status light on the switch to operate as a "power on" indicator (example...you always seem to forget to shut the light off in the garage...and the light switch is in the house...with the LED in this mode, you can tell if the light is on in the garage...the LED status light glows green...when you shut the light off...the LED status light turns off. Simple idea right...but very difficult to find on smart light switches. Or you can configure the LED status light as a "pilot light"...(example...its night...you need to find the light switch...the LED status light is on).
We have both Alexa Echo Dot and Google Home. Alexa was simple and quick to setup and worked right away. Google Home was a little more difficult and still can't seem to get it to work with the switch.
The switch works with Nest but will only turn on/off with movement on a camera or flash the lights when the smoke/CO2 alarms activate; I really wish it was more integrated with google as we own a lot of nest products. I also wish it would show up as a device within the Nest app, only alternative to turn on/off the light using your phone is using the My Leviton app.
The My Leviton app does not use the device location to determine when nobody is home to turn off the light like nest does with its products. My Leviton has the away/home button, but has to be changed manually.
The scheduling option for turning on/off the switch at determined times for each day is easy to use and works well. It also has different programming options to add commands to a group of lights or rooms if you had more switches which is ok, but is kinda limited in your options.
Overall pretty satisfied with the switch, but due to limited integration with nest, I would not change out any more of my switches and would only recommend using this switch if planning on using it with Alexa or with the easy use Leviton app to schedule times/days for light.
