Product Description
Grind and Brew Coffeemaker
Retire your alarm clock and wake up instead to the rich aroma of freshly ground, just brewed coffee, with the Cuisinart Grind & Brew Automatic Coffeemaker. This deluxe 12-cup model offers the best of Cuisinart's expert coffeemaking technology to deliver unsurpassed ease of use and rich full-bodied coffee flavor. With streamlined European styling and a graceful carafe, it's a beautiful addition to any kitchen.
A perfect addition to any modern kitchen, this 12-cup automatic coffeemaker grinds whole beans right before brewing to produce a fresh and flavorful pot of coffee. Its 24-hour full programmability means the unit can be set for "wake-up" coffee or for having coffee ready when it's time to serve dessert--without having to get up from the table. In addition, its brew-pause function makes it possible to sneak a cup before the end of the brewing cycle.
The Grind & Brew Coffeemaker features a separate grinding assembly and filter chamber to make beans easy to add and used grounds easy to remove. A convenient "grind off" control turns the grinder off when preground coffee is used.
Smaller amounts can be brewed without any loss of flavor thanks to the units 1- to 4-cup setting. For added convenience, the coffeemaker provides a large control panel, adjustable automatic shut-off from zero to four hours, and a 12-cup (5 ounces each) glass carafe with a generous stay-cool handle and drip-free pouring spout.
Accessories include a gold-tone commercial-style permanent filter and a charcoal water filter for removing impurities. The sleek-looking coffeemaker measures 12 by 9-4/5 by 17-1/2 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.
A charcoal water filter and a permanent commercial-style gold tone coffee filter allow only pure flavor to flow through, and the popular Brew Pause feature lets you sneak a cup before the cycle is finished.

Special Features
The Perfect Cup of Coffee
Element 1: Water
Coffee is 98% water. The quality of that water is as important as the quality of your coffee. If water doesn't taste good from the tap, it won't taste good in your coffee. That's why Cuisinart has added a water filter to the Grind & Brew Coffeemaker. The charcoal filter removes chlorine, bad tastes, and odors, for the purest coffee flavor, every time you brew.
Element 2: Coffee
While coffee is 98% water, all of the flavor comes from the beans. To achieve the same great taste you enjoy at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality of coffee.
Buy the beans fresh and whole, only about two weeks' supply at a time for maximum freshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. That's why the Grind & Brew grinds your coffee just prior to brewing. If it is not practical to buy small supplies, separate larger amounts of beans into one to two week portions immediately after purchase, and freeze them in airtight containers.
The best way to maximize freshness is to minimize exposure to air, light, and moisture. So, once beans have been removed from the freezer, maintain them in a sealed container at room temperature, since damaging condensation occurs every time the beans are removed from the freezer or refrigerator. Note that some coffee experts advise against freezing dark-roast beans, because freezing can cause the oils to coagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggest you experiment and decide for yourself.
Element 3: Grind
The grind is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over-extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the maximum flavor will not be extracted. The Grind & Brew is preset for a medium grind, the optimal grind for this type of coffeemaker.
Element 4: Proportion
Coffee that is too strong or too weak is always a disappointment. Follow the recommended portions of ground coffee in the instructions included with every Grind & Brew, and later adjust the amount to suit your taste. The Grind & Brew makes up to twelve (12) 5-ounce cups of coffee

Needless to say mornings are not a lot of fun for me and I have been allowing myself to get going later and later these days. So, in an effort to stop the current system of waking up 16 times before finally giving in to what little reason I can muster to actually get out of bed I decided to make a critical change. This is where this coffee maker comes in. I live in a basement and I am fine with this. The sun can kiss my a&& until I am ready for it anyway, but the need for caffeine can not be underestimated. Upstairs people make coffee I can't differentiate from water and it's an awfully long way to walk. This coffee maker is literally bedside now, hardly an arms full bend away. And it is proving to be a perfect tool for this application. Similar models have a giant "tank" on top you just dump a bag of beans into until you feel like you have enough. This is problematic for me because I like to change my coffees on a regular basis. This maker has a nice grinder housing that you measure your dosage into and it's clean with a quick rinse and ready for something new. Another bonus here is the grind basket, this is similar to the other models I will continue to complain about except it is very simple. Other models have some components to the grind basket that need to be turned into the right position to operate and are generally harder to clean. This is a single non mechanical piece of easily removed and rinsed plastic. Another win.
Other than that everything else seems about comparable to other makers of this nature, and I would estimate a bit cheaper at that.
Now this part may not matter to other purchasers but it is important to me. Seeing as how I live in the basement and I have a tendency to want to throw my phone when the alarm goes off I have discovered other benefits to having this machine so close to my bed. It's loud when it grinds, and it has the program feature that lets you set a time to begin brewing. Welcome my new alarm clock. It smells better when it starts to go off, and even better I am rewarded for waking up when I get to drink enough coffee to have a mild heart attack before standing up. This is quite outstanding. It comes with a little metal reusable basket as well and the grinds can go in the toilet and will help keep the bathroom smelling fresh.
Other notes (for those wise enough to skip the above rantings):
Comes with a charcoal filter. Nice but I will likely be using bottled water given the placement of my unit.
Simple to use and clean. The cleaning part is a big deal to me.
Replaces other appliances like alarm clocks and bathroom fresheners. Probably not a common value but none the less should be noted.
Good grind, not too fine and not to chunky.
Smells better than an alarm clock.
Decent price. The unit I am comparing this too cost a fair amount more a few years ago and is a pain in comparison.
Use whole bean or pre-ground coffee.
Comes with all you need. I stole no utensils from anyone to start using this.
Looks nice.
Like the latch on the door to the filter wasn't very strong. So, after it was about a year old, in the middle of brewing, occasionally the door would pop open and take the filter with it. Then the hot water would just spill out everywhere. I solved this problem by taking the spring out of the door. (The filter door doesn't really need to spring open anyway, you can just pull it open.) However, on the new model, this latch seems to be a better design. It seems like you have to push the button in farther before the door will spring open. So even if it gets a little dirty, or a little worn, I don't think it will pop open randomly. So, I don't think I'll be having the same problem.
Towards the end of its life, I had the same sort of problem with the latch on the top. Every time the grinder started, the beans would fly up into the top of the bean cup, and push it open. The coffee maker has a sensor that turns off the grinder when the top is open, so thankfully there wasn't a huge mess to clean up. But, I couldn't get it to make coffee unless I was holding the top down with my hand, or weighing it down with something heavy. Now, again, this was in the last six months of the old coffee maker's life. So, I'm not super mad about it; that's just what ultimately led to me deciding to replace it. But on the new coffee maker, I can see the button and the latch clearly, and they are obviously bigger and sturdier. So, again, I don't expect to have the same problem.
Other than that, it looks good. It makes coffe just the way I like. And it's really nice to have coffee freshly ground, and brewed, and waiting for you when you wake up in the morning. It's easy to program. The programming is pretty intuitive except for one thing, and that one thing IS covered in the instructions: in order to set the timer for how long you want it to stay on and keep the coffee warm (1, 2, 3, or 4 hours) you have to hold down the "on" button until the display starts blinking; the default is 2 hours.
A word about self described coffee afficianados who complain about having to clean the coffee maker after every brew. Don't know where they learned to make coffee, but 2 cardinal rules are a clean pot every time and pure water. Contrary to urban myth, throwing coffee grounds and creek water into a tin can and boiling it over a hobo fire by the side of the tracks does not make good coffee
